Famous Golfers from the Philippines
While the Philippines may be lacking superstars in golf, there have been a number of successful golfers hailing from that region. Filipino golfers have been winning championships and tournaments consistently in the amateur and junior divisions. The Philippines has a rich history of golf and the Filipino golfers are bearing the flag proudly. Here are some of the famous golfers from the Philippines.
Philip Ang
Philip Ang became one of the Philippines’ youngest golfers to win a tournament when he clinched the International Junior Championship in 1999, in the age group of 11 – 13 years. He was only the second Filipino golfer to triumph at that event.
Ben Arda
Ben Arda became the first Filipino golfer to play at the Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf. He was also the first at the British Open and took part in a few golf World Cups in the 60’s. Arda was also a Philippine Open winner thrice.
Ramon Brobio
Ramon Brobio was the winner of the gold medal in men’s golf at the 1986 Asian games. A famous junior golfer, Brobio was the first-ever triple winner at the Junior World Golf Championships, doing so in the 18th edition of the tournament in 1985.
Dorothy Delasin
Dorothy Delasin is a Filipino-American golfer. She was born in the United States of America, but chose to play golf for the Philippines, winning the Women’s World Cup of Golf in 2008 as part of Team Philippines. Dorothy Delasin won her first LPGA tournament in 2000 at the age of 19, creating the record for being the youngest female golfer to win an LPGA event. So far, Delasin has won 5 professional tournaments.
Frankie Minoza
Frankie Minoza is one of the most famous Filipino golfers of all time. He has been awarded the Filipino Athlete of the Year twice, the first in 1990 and second in 1998. He has played constantly on the Asian tour for many seasons, winning a number of titles and has also played at the British Open and the U.S. PGA Tour.
Jennifer Rosales
Jennifer Rosales was a part of Team Philippines that won the 4th Women’s World Cup of Golf in 2008, teaming up with Dorothy Delasin. Rosales was the winner of the US NCAA Individual Championship in 1999 and finished fourth at the British Open in 2002.
Golf has had a strong connection with the Philippines for almost a century but the sport is still waiting for its Manny Pacquaio.
